🐴Anyone who knows me IRL knows that I’m an an 🐴Anyone who knows me IRL knows that I’m an animal person, specifically I love dogs. But any and all animals are sacred in my worldview. But it’s only recently that I’ve really felt drawn to write, think and talk about the Grand National.
We’ve probably all seen the recent controversies that have resulted from the needless and cruel death of horses who have been injured during the race.

The common argument for the Grand National has always been the financial and economic importance that it has, but as with all things there’s a fine line between sport and exploitation.

Over recent years, there has been a steady increase in the number of horses who have lost their lives at the grand national. Having gone years without any deaths, the recent event was the highest it’s been in years.

It got me to thinking and having researched the issue, I know support a ban on the Grand National. Either that, or considerable changes need to be made.

As with the climate crisis and any other industry that results in some kind of harm, healthy and serious debates need to happen about how we can make things less harmful.

Unless the Grand National can create a plan to improve safety for the horses involved, I believe the event should be halted.

👑3 reasons why I will never be a monarchist🇬 👑3 reasons why I will never be a monarchist🇬🇧

ONE
A system based on a single, unelected head of state inherently creates inequality. In suggesting that one person or famiy has a divine right to rule, we’re suggesting that they are elite in some way. It’s against our supposed metocraric principles. Most of us are now secular and if a ‘God’ hasn’t appointed our leader, then it means that we have. If poses the question of what (or why) one family are better than any other. At its core is the one principle that continues to enforce inequality around the world - money.

TWO.
A democracy is relating upon the accountability of those to whom we’d designate power. The monarch is born into the role and holds it for life, removing our right to hold them to account.

THREE.
It costs us money. Despite being wealthy in their own right, each year the British governing pays the Sovereign Grant to the monarch. In 21/22 they were paid over £100 million by the government. Some might say (myself included) that this money could be better spent elsewhere.

(Bonus point - I’m Welsh and the history of injustices makes it all the more difficult.)
Last week I visited Highgate Cemetery in London, t Last week I visited Highgate Cemetery in London, the final resting place of Sheila Caffell and the twins (@whfmurders).

As my research comes to an end, it felt like the right thing to do.

Unfortunately, there’s no longer a grave marker for their burial plot but I was able to locate the area where they are buried.

I won’t be sharing that here, but I was able to light a candle for Shiela and her two boys.

For anyone living in or visiting London, Highgate is a fascinating place to spend a few hours. I recommend doing the tour, as the money goes straight into the restoration of the site.
